Excited to replace my beat up 3 blade with a nice new 4 blade prop. Should help get us on plane sooner, maintain top speed while helping out the hole shot for tubing/skiing/etc. Went with a 14x20 on our 20 ft bow rider.

Prop shopping for boat geeks = tire shopping for car geeks.

Hilariously boring but super exciting.

Just be glad you don’t need a brass prop.

I’ve recently deciphered the extra props that came with my boat. I have a 15, 13, 11, and a 9. The question is, how much should I prop down to operate at 9,000' if the manufacturer recommends a 15 at sea level?

I’m thinking 9. I need to buy a new 15 though. The one I have is ....... rough.

I’m confused. Why would altitude require a different prop? Is water a different density at altitude like air?

You would think that as long as you are in the water would the boat technically be at sea level? even if you were at a lake 9,000' up.

HP loss due to altitude. Like starting out in 3rd, you might be able to do it if you have full power but if you are down 30%, due to altitude, you might not be able to do it.

at 9000 feet they suggest -7 in pitch. So if you’re happy with a 15 at sea level drop on the 9 at that altitude.

Side note: that’s way way up there.

Looks like a 9 it is when I am at 9,000'. I’ll have to check out the 13 as the boat runs fine at 5,500' with a 15. Little slow out of the hole but I’m not towing anyone.

Are brass props super expensive? Where would you need one? Saltwater I’m guessing?

Ski boats. And yes, they are expensive. About $300-500 a pop. Its also why there was so much ski boat prop theft years ago that I can’t even sell my old damaged one to a shop to fix and sell...they assume I stole it.

I’m sure a quick google would tell me, but what’s the benefit of a brass prop, and why does a ski boat need one?

I have no idea why ski boats need them, but they all have them.

On the Stainless

Good: Greater performance, blades won’t flex, tend to give more bite into the water. Resistant to minor dings.

Bad: Pricey. Possibly greater damage, blades won’t flex. If you hit something hard, chances are that you could damage more than the prop. Shaft, strut, coupling, etc

Wildcard: $$ to fix a SS prop?

NIBRAL:

Good: Not as pricey for the new ones. You can probably find a replacement fairly inexpensively. Easier (cheaper) to repair $75 and $90 for my two love taps (courtesy of the in-laws  )

Bad: Picks up the dings a little easier. Reportedly not as good performance compared to the CNC and SS props.

And What’s NIBRAL, you might ask (I did at least):
